Medical career exposure & emergency preparedness - MedCEEP

The Medical Careers Exposure and Emergency Preparedness program is a program designed to initially equip High School students (and staff) with the emergency response skills needed to potentially save lives in the communities struck most by the health disparities that lead to a higher rate of strokes, heart attacks, and gun violence. The program aims to address the health disparities resulting from a lack of health providers in these same communities via a 6-8 week program to expose and guide students to health related careers.

Through the Emergency Preparedness Program (initial component of MedCEEP), we focus on empowering 7-12th grade students to become trained in recognizing and responding to the most prevalent life-threatening scenarios, in which delays in receiving medical attention could prove fatal. Specifically, with young black and latinx physicians, nurses, medical students and EMT’s/Paramedics, we teach the skills needed to recognize and respond to strokes, cardiac arrest, and penetrating wounds (gun shots, stab wounds, and accidents).

Participants will learn the critical symptoms of stroke, cardiac arrest, and life-threatening bleeding, and demonstrate that they know when to call for medical assistance and how to render first responder medical aid (CPR, defibrillator use, gunshot/stab wound packing, and tourniquet application) in each respective instance.  60-90 min Training on Stroke, Hands only CPR, and Stop The Bleed
